Airline check-in systems enforce this automatically. Expiry in nine months? Then your ETIAS lasts nine months, not three years. Renewing the passport therefore cancels the linked ETIAS, even one you already paid for. Many airlines go further and check a six-month buffer. A 2026 exit on 10 October, for example, needs a passport valid until 11 January 2027 at a bare minimum. Renew early. You then have to file a fresh application, pay \u20ac20 again and wait for approval. Whatever you paid on the old passport is gone; it does not transfer. The old authorization still shows in your account history, but you cannot reactivate it. Many countries also issue a &#8216;temporary return&#8217; certificate that borders accept. The safest move, though, is simply to travel home on the old valid passport. US ESTA and UK ETA handle renewals exactly the same way. If your passport expires within three years, budget for a second \u20ac20 now.
