What is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a new digital travel requirement introduced by the European Union. Similar to the US ESTA or the UK ETA, ETIAS will be mandatory for citizens of 59 visa-exempt countries and territories before entering 30 European countries — the Schengen Area plus Cyprus.
ETIAS is not a visa. It is a pre-travel screening linked electronically to your passport: no embassy visits, no biometrics, no interviews. You apply online, pay €20, and in most cases receive your authorisation within minutes. Once approved, it allows unlimited short stays — up to 90 days in any 180-day period — for tourism, business, transit or medical visits.
The system was created to strengthen European border security: every application is automatically checked against EU and Interpol security databases before the traveller ever boards a plane, ferry or coach.

ETIAS has been postponed several times — it was originally planned for 2021, then 2023, 2024 and 2025 — mainly because it depends on the Entry/Exit System (EES), which had to come first. With EES fully operational since April 2026, the EU has confirmed ETIAS will start in the final quarter of 2026. The exact date will be announced several months in advance on the official EU website — and here on Europe-Visa.eu.
How Does ETIAS Work? Step by Step
- Apply online. Fill in the official application form — it takes about 10–20 minutes. No embassy visit, no biometrics, no interview.
- Provide your details. Passport data, personal information and answers to background questions on security, health and previous travel.
- Pay the €20 fee. Applicants under 18 or over 70 are exempt from payment (but still need an authorisation).
- Automated screening. Your application is checked against EU and international databases — SIS, VIS, Europol, EES, Eurodac, ECRIS-TCN, Interpol — and the ETIAS watchlist.
- Get your decision. The vast majority of applications are approved within minutes. Manual review can take up to 4 days — or up to 30 days if additional documents or an interview are required.
- ETIAS links to your passport. There is no paper document — airlines, ferry and coach operators verify it electronically at check-in.
- Travel for up to 90 days. Within any 180-day period, across all 30 participating countries — one authorisation covers them all.
- Valid for 3 years. Or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Unlimited trips during its validity.
Who Needs ETIAS?

Who does NOT need ETIAS? EU and Irish citizens (including dual nationals travelling on their EU passport), holders of EU residence permits or Schengen visas, and nationals of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican.
Which 30 Countries Can You Visit With ETIAS?
One ETIAS covers all 29 Schengen Area countries plus Cyprus. Border-free travel between them means you only show your ETIAS-linked passport when first entering the zone:
Ireland is not part of ETIAS — it keeps its own entry rules. Monaco, San Marino and the Vatican are reached through the Schengen Area.

ETIAS vs. EES: What’s the Difference?
Travellers often confuse the EU’s two new border systems — they work together but do different jobs. The Entry/Exit System (EES), fully operational since April 2026, is what happens at the border: it registers your fingerprints and facial image digitally instead of stamping your passport. You don’t apply for EES — it happens automatically on arrival. ETIAS is what happens before you travel: an online authorisation you must obtain before boarding. EES deliberately came first — ETIAS screening uses EES records.

What happens if I travel without ETIAS after launch?
During an initial transitional grace period of at least six months, border guards will inform travellers but admit first entries without ETIAS. After the transition ends, carriers will deny boarding without a valid authorisation.
Do children need ETIAS?
Yes — every traveller needs an authorisation regardless of age, but applicants under 18 pay no fee.
Do UK citizens need ETIAS?
Yes. Since Brexit, British passport holders are visa-exempt third-country nationals and will need ETIAS like Americans or Canadians. Irish citizens do not — Ireland is an EU member. UK residents in the EU protected by the Withdrawal Agreement are also exempt.
Can my ETIAS application be refused?
Yes, but refusals are expected to be rare (only a few percent). Common reasons are an invalid passport, hits in security databases or incomplete answers. You can appeal a refusal or re-apply with corrected information.
Do I need ETIAS for a layover or transit?
Yes — airport transit through a Schengen airport will require ETIAS if you are a visa-exempt national.
Is there an official ETIAS website?
Yes — the only official application portal will be travel-europe.europa.eu and the official ETIAS mobile app. Applications are not open yet; be wary of any site claiming it can sell you an ETIAS before launch.
