What is ETIAS?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a digital pre-travel screening system created by the European Union to enhance border security across the Schengen Area. Starting in Q4 2026, citizens of 62 visa-exempt countries — including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Japan — must obtain an approved ETIAS before entering any of the 30 European countries covered by the system.
ETIAS was established under EU Regulation 2018/1240 of the European Parliament and of the Council. The system is developed and managed by eu-LISA (European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice), the same agency that operates the Schengen Information System (SIS) and the Visa Information System (VIS).
ETIAS is Not a Visa
ETIAS is not a visa. It is an electronic travel authorisation, similar to the United States’ ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) or the United Kingdom’s ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). Unlike a Schengen visa, ETIAS does not require an embassy visit, in-person interviews, or extensive supporting documents. The entire application is completed online in approximately 10 minutes.
Why Was ETIAS Created?
The European Commission proposed ETIAS in November 2016 to address security gaps in the visa-free travel framework. According to the European Commission’s official documentation, ETIAS was designed to:
- Enhance border security by pre-screening travelers before arrival, cross-referencing against Europol, Interpol, SIS, and VIS databases
- Prevent illegal immigration through advanced automated risk assessment
- Combat terrorism and serious crime by identifying security threats before they reach EU borders
- Streamline border crossings by enabling faster processing at entry points
- Address public health risks by including health-related screening questions
How Does ETIAS Work?
ETIAS uses an automated screening process that cross-references applicant data against multiple European and international security databases. According to eu-LISA, these include:
- Schengen Information System (SIS) — Europe’s most widely used security database
- Visa Information System (VIS) — Records of previous visa applications
- Europol data — Law enforcement intelligence
- Interpol databases — Including stolen and lost travel documents
- Eurodac — Fingerprint database for asylum seekers
- ECRIS-TCN — Criminal records of third-country nationals
Approximately 95% of applications are expected to be approved automatically within minutes, according to European Commission estimates. The remaining 5% may require manual review by national authorities, which can take up to 4 weeks.

When Does ETIAS Start?
ETIAS is scheduled to launch in Q4 2026, according to the latest timeline confirmed by the European Commission. After launch, the EU plans a 6-month transitional period during which travelers without ETIAS may still enter the Schengen Area. After this grace period, ETIAS becomes mandatory for all eligible travelers.
